A Visit to My Fairy Thrift Mother

I decided to change it up this week, so instead of going to an estate sale, I hit up my favorite thrift shop and a neighborhood church rummage sale.

This thrift shop is run by this sweet old lady who prices everything incredibly fair (aka cheap). She is my Fairy Thrift Mother. I go to this shop maybe once a month and magically things seem to be waiting for me. This is what I scored...

Just like magic, my Fairy Thrift Mother granted me a way to complete an instant vignette of black, white and blue. First I found two blue roses made in Italy by Capodimonte. The petals are porcelain and the stems are metal. The two long necked swans are ceramic in a matte black, they are unmarked but totally awesome. I think they look mid century. Lastly, the Chicago Tribune insert was a previous estate sale find about the Chicago Blizzard of 1967. Being a Chicagoan I just had to have that piece of history and at 10 cents it was begging to be framed.

I also was granted an instant collection of vintage playing cards $1 each set, how could I go wrong? What will I do with all these cards?- I have absolutely no idea, but they were all too pretty to leave behind.  I'm expecting a cool project will come up in my head and I'll turn them into something beautiful. I'll let you when that revelation happens. Till then they will probably end up in my shop waiting for their buyer.

Before leaving my Fairy Thrift Mother's shop, I rummaged through a stack of books and picked up an instant collection of vintage 1950's Good Housekeeping Cook Books. Maybe she was hinting to me that I should not forget to work on my biggest domestic challenge...

FYI, I can actually say I hate cooking. However, the pictures within these books are sooo cute, maybe I'll be inspired?- NOT -, but let me show you some of the charming pics anyway...

Next stop...church rummage sale. I didn't know it but my Fairy Thrift Mother must've blew her magic dust on me before I left because I went to that rummage sale and ended up with these super duper hard to find shakers.

These are Van Tellingen peek-a-boo salt and pepper shakers. I didn't know anything about them but I just had an inkling they might be worth something. After doing my quick on-line research these are designed by Ruth Van Tellingen Belden for the Regal China Company in the 1950's - 1960's. They are supposedly chipmunks or bunnies. These are the larger sized version 5.25" tall and apparently more difficult to find than the 3.75" version. These will be up in the shop ASAP :)

And the grand finale from this rummage sale... was the Fairy Thrift Mother herself blowing her final good wishes my way...

A bunch of Napco and Lefton figurines, and an American Family Scale Yay!

That's my quick show and tell for this week... until next time my Fairy Thrift Mother!

  3. Hi, I'm a fellow Chicago thrifter so I was happy to come across your blog. I'm surprised you found a church rummage sale, it didn't think it was the season for them yet! I'm a fan of collecting local history too so I love the 'snow' picture you found.
